Packing Yourself

  1. Plan to start packing well in advance of the moving day (avoid last minute rush).
  1. Pack Cd’s, books, and records in the smaller heavy-duty cartons only (watch the weight).
  1. You can leave all clothing, or linens in dresser drawers but remove all fragile or heavy items to be packed.  Small pictures can be placed between sheets and linens.
  1. If packing your own china, glass or crystal, be sure to wrap the items individually, providing plenty of cushioning and making sure of a firm pack. Be sure to place a two or three inch layer of unprinted paper on the bottom of the carton as a cushion. Pack heaviest items on the bottom and lighter ones next, filling in empty spaces with crushed paper. Place plates on edge and glassware on rims for maximum protection. Be sure to mark the carton 'Fragile', and list the contents on the outside.

  1. Tie or tape brooms, mops curtain rods, and fishing rods in bundles.
  1. Table lamps should be packed in cartons, lampshades in cartons by themselves to avoid being crushed.
  1. Mark 'fragile' on cartons that need special attention, and mark all cartons on the top and side for easy identification of room to be placed. Using a different colored dot sticker on the boxes and then placing the same color dot on the door of the room it is to be placed may be helpful.
  1. Pack a box of Moving Essentials: toilet paper, telephone, toothpaste and brushes, snacks, coffee and coffee pot (don’t forget filters), soap, flashlight, screwdriver, pliers, can opener, paper plates, cups and utensils, a pan and paper towels…(the first to open box).
  1. Be sure to carry your own valuable papers, pictures, keys to cabinets currency, jewellery - movers will not be responsible for these.
  1. Defrost your fridge and have your washer unhooked and blocked for moving the day before…discuss your freezer contents with your mover in advance.
  1.  Dispose of hazardous materials such as flammable, explosive or none corrosive liquids and compressed gases i.e. propane tanks.
  1. Drain fuel from outboard motors and power mowers. When shipping a vehicle leave no more than a ¼ tank of gas.
  1. Notify the following persons:
Utilities
Vehicle License Office
Post Office
Banks
Doctor, Dentist, School Authorities
Family & Old Age Pension Allowances
Magazine Publishers

  1. Moving can be stressful to all. Children may feel the affects, let them pack some of their toys and write their names on the boxes that will be going to their new rooms.
Make sure the moving company has a cellular # or a contact phone # for the driver when he arrives at the destination.
